Wardrobe Essentials for a Timeless Closet

Last week, a friend had asked me if I had a fashion motto or something that I kept in mind while dressing or purchasing clothes. I didn't really have an answer other than, "when in doubt, dress up." But once I gave it some thought, I really like this quote above because I believe that if you are overdressed, at least you look fantastic. And the same goes with education, knowing more will always be a strength (maybe not in the financial sense...). But the idea of mottos got me to thinking, what are my wardrobe essentials? My style has become more refined and I'm trying to cut back on the "trend train", and there seems to be some essentials which I keep going back to.
